As good as it gets -or- I have just lost a day

I have changed the blog's template quite a bit this last 24 hours. I was up until
2 this morning and back at it from 7 till 11!
But it is finally done!

Firstly I widened the body and narrowed the sidebar, no mean feat let me tell ya, this involved making and resizing the pictures that go to make up the blog eg:the heading underlines, finding what all those numbers mean in the HTML. I had
problems when the main body overlapped the sidebar, the sidebar wouldn't align right. I had to go through the template line by line and change something and see what it did, then I'd have to remember what I changed and go back in and change it back.

The blog previewed beautifully, for many hours, but on saving the changes and checking the site itself, it would muck up, I was at my wits end (not in tears though this time :) )

So, this is as good as it gets. I am not changing anything else I can live with the text right up snug with the sidebar. I can, honest. :I

I don't wanna learn HTML anymore.

Oh I also made myself a new header and a button to match.
I took some of the sock yarn that I hand dyed last year and arranged it artistically and took many photos. The yarn butterfly I ended up with was quite by accident but I think it's pretty cool.

I will show some of the hand dyed yarn in a later post as I have spent too long on the computer, my butt hurts and I need a shower!

Slippers are done

Slippers pre felting, if you look closely I grafted one toe and used a three needle bind-off for the other. After felting you can see the three needle bind-off, so back to grafting (even a terrible grafting job looked better felted than a good three needle bind off)

Slippers are all finished. The felting process took 2 hours, I began to think that it wouldn't happen but as you can see below it did :) . DD tried them on before declaring that they were itchy. Great! Wear 'em with socks then. It is sometimes disappointing to be a knitter in a family who don't appreciate a knitted gift. Oh well, that means I can knit more things for me. Now onto my purple slippers.

I wonder how long these will last, the first slippers I made didn't last too long (4 weeks) before holes started appearing hopefully felting makes them stronger.

HTML Lesson
Sidebar updates: I changed that horrible orangey colour for the font, line and background colour in the blog description box.(Why design a pink and grey template with an orange box??) Lots of trial and error with the colour codes to find the right thing to change, and found that some of them were images. After a bit of tweaking in Paint Shop Pro they are now more pink. I like 'em.
This HTML stuff isn't quite as hard as I had anticipated.

You've been very, very naughty!

I’ve been a bad girl! Hehehe

I have made a start on the felted slippers for my DD. Hers are pink, and mine will be purple and black. I used the Carnival yarn from Big W.
The pattern is Knitting at Knoon's free slipper pattern.
The first one took 3 days to complete and I am halfway through the second one. Now let me just say that this pattern is fantastic, I love it! It is easy to knit and the heel turn is a snap (heel turns worry me) although I do have to practise grafting the toes, ick hopefully the next one won’t be so bad, but as they are felted I’ve heard that the felting process hides imperfections. Fingers crossed. Very happy with them so far.

Here’s the bad part,
I went out to get a circular needle for the Knitting Olympics shawl and shorter needles for the slippers, much easier now, and as the yarn shops are not too far from each other decided to take a trip to both of them.

They sell YoYo!! I didn’t know we could get YoYo in Adelaide!! But the shop didn’t have the colourway I wanted. Love the Damson Mist one, oh well. At least they had the correct needles I wanted needed . The second yarn store also had YoYo, ooh happy dance. The fact that I am awaiting an order, from the UK - more on that when it arrives, didn't stop me, I ended up buying 2 balls one dark blue for a jumper for myself, and one in purple for my DD, she says she would like the hooded jumper from the book that came with the yarn.
Oh, I also spotted the Paris Mohair Sparkle I fell in love with the dark purply pink colour in that and got 4 balls, I thought that it would look good in the triangular shawl pattern. Oh so sparkly and purply.

And when I got home what was waiting for me but this:

The pattern and yarn for my Knitting Olympics project and a couple of back issues of Creative Knitting. The yarn is Karabella's Gossamer and the pattern is the Triangular Shawl. (I couldn’t have worked out how to knit this by myself, I had enough trouble with the bought pattern – see below)

I have also been hunting back issues of the ‘Simply Knitting’ magazine, 3 of them I found on ebay. So that leaves issue number 4 left to get, I’m unsure if it has sold out but I’ll ring them later tonight and find out, now why didn’t I do that in the first place rather than pay double the price on ebay?? I just jump in head first without thinking things through. Driven on by my ‘gotta have’ mentality. I think I really enjoy the hunt and gather part left over from our primitive past.

The Knitting Olympics…

As we are allowed to train swatch before the flame is lit I had a go at getting the shawl started. Oh dear! I started with only 3 sts cast on and even that was bad. The increases were looking terrible, the side edges were icky, loose and horrible, I was nearly in tears, what was I doing wrong?? I was thinking, “I can’t knit this, if I can’t do this what sort of knitter am I?” I even considered giving up knitting for good or just knitting scarves for the rest of my life. It was an emotionally bad time; it was like if I can’t do this simple shawl then I am a complete loser.

Then something inside me kicked in and I thought bugger it it’s not going to beat me. I looked at my small monstrosity of a shawl and took it step by step:

First I started with the cast on edge so I frogged it over and over till I got that looking right. This just needed to be pulled a bit tighter.

Secondly were the increases, the pattern called for a M1 increase and I thought I was doing it the right way but thought to double check it with one of my many knitting books.
It seems there are several ways to do a M1 increase depending whether you want it to slant to the left or right. Whether to slip the yarn between the needles from the back to the front or from the front to the back, and whether to knit it through the back loop or not. Aha! I tested the different angles and yep, perfect increases.
I was angry that I had to work this out for myself, if I buy a pattern then shouldn’t it include the correct increases needed, not just a broad instruction of M1?

Thirdly, the edge stitches needed attention now the pattern just said, Note slip the first stitch of each row. BUT it didn’t say whether to slip knitwise or purlwise, so back to my knitting book. This was easier to find, as it is knit a row and the increases are in this row and the next row is purl, (like stockinette stitch) the edging for this in the book said to slip knitwise on a knit row and purlwise on a purl row. This worked a treat and the difference in the edging is amazing! Note that this is only a practise run and that the yarn and needle size will be different than pictured here.

I am so glad I tried this out first, I can imagine the mess I would have been in if I was doing it for real.

So, I am off to have lunch, tidy the house, clean the bathroom, do the laundry and finish the slippers.

You can see that I've learnt to code/do strikethrough text, I've learnt lots, just look at my sidebar, I've got buttons and links and java percent bars and a sheep, oh my!
*puffs chest out* I even edited the java part where it says not to unless you are a java queen....oh okay, it was just an address change but I uploaded the photos to my photobucket account and linked 'em and they work *wink*

Lazy Days

I haven't been doing much lately, I have knit a bit more of the scarf though. My hands are still losing their skin so I haven't knit any of the vest.

It has been really quiet around here, DD *might* be home today, but they have a 7-8 hour drive so they may stop halfway for the night.

That's it for today, lazy days indeed :)

Vest, what vest??

Ahh the vest is going really slow. The yarn is very rough and it is uncomfortable where my wrist is rubbing against the fabric, not to mention it is rubbing skin off of my little finger! not a great deal but just enough to be noticed. I can't post any pictures because I sent the camera off with my daughter - see below - but I have knit about 10cms so far.

Hmm should I just give it up or keep going, I like the colours but it is just a wee bit uncomfortable to knit. I think, maybe it will have to go.

I don't think I have another yarn substitute in my stash, and I only wanted to do it as a practise for the neck shaping.
There's nearly 400g of this stuff! If I can't stand to knit it what else can I do with it? Bin it?
Bummer.

My ex and my daughter have gone off on a holiday for a week, I was hoping this would take my mind off of missing her. Oh well sussing out a new project ought to work the same won't it?
Problem is I can't knit, I can't eat and I can't sleep. I feel very sad and lost without her.

I have her feathers scarf I could do, I forgot to measure her feet so I can't start her slippers yet, I want something that I don't have to think too hard about. Maybe I'll end up finishing that *@#* vest afterall.

Secret Pal Stuff

I heard from my SP today and I am excited.
I received a lovely ecard of a cute lil mouse.
Thank you SP you brightened my day.

I am gathering items for the person that I am sending gifts to, but I can't show them here can I?
Well once it's finished I will show what I sent. (must remember to take photos first)

Holiday Countdown
5 more sleeps and they'll be home.

About Me

6. Favourite drink is Farmer's Union Iced Coffee.

7. Favourite food is snitzel parmigiana and lasagne.

8. Have 4 cats.

9. Leo is my starsign, but I don't consider myself a typical Leo as I am quiet and shy.

10. I can be a little impatient.

11. I don't wear skirts or dresses and prefer my jeans.

12. I love my music.

13. I don't dance in public.

14. I have the complete Buffy The Vampire Slayer series on DVD.

15. I am a chocoholic. Can't help myself.

16. I am 36 yrs old, brown hair, hazel eyes.

17. Love computers and the internet.

18. I tend to get lost in cyberspace and can lose hours online.

19. Prefer Pepsi over Coke. Pepsi Light actually.

20. Eat too much unhealthy food and not enough vegies and fruit. (working on this though)

21. Love my job in Special Ed.

22. Do not drink alcohol - don't like the taste.

Finished the shrug, started a vest.

I was pleased to finish this one, but my smile soon disappeared.
You know how when you finish something and you put it on and go to the mirror to check yourself out, then you go and find someone to show it to, even your cat?
I chose people instead of cats this time, what a mistake that was.
I chose my ex and my daughter.

Some of their comments went like this:
"What the h*** is that?"
"It looks like a half finished jumper that you didn't pull all the way over your head"
"Are you sure it's finished?"
"What does it do?"
"Never heard of a shrug"
"I didn't know that was what you were doing"
"Yeah Mum"

This is the joy of living with people who do not understand knitting.

I consoled myself by casting on for my practise vest.

It's a practise run because I haven't knit anything with a neckline yet, and had a huge ball of 100% acrylic to use up. I say it's huge because after I took the plastic off it just went boof and sprang open, so I put it in a big bucket.
Can anyone foresee the problems I'm going to have yet? I can. (notice my lil foot by the big bucket)

It is 375g and the colour is very similar to Sully from Monsters Inc. I don't know if I'll wear this in public yet.

This vest has a V neck and I am scared at the prospect of knitting it.
The pattern says to use a pair of needles, but as my seaming is awful, I am changing it to knit in the round, then change to 2 needles at the armholes and go on from there.
How hard could that be?
Just cast on double the amount needed, right ok so that's 250 sts.
Then start the ribbing.
This is fine in theory but you really have to concentrate on this first row and get the k1p1 pattern exact. I found out what happens if you accidentally do one, just one, k2 somewhere in the row.
You knit around for about 240 odd stitches before you discover your mistake!

Oh well, I ripped it out and started again. This is where I'm up to. I may need some help when I get to the shaping, so any advice is very welcome.

Busy Busy Busy

I can see know that having this blog is going to take up more of my time.
Luckily I am on holidays right now and for the next 4 weeks, so that gives me some time to play.

My little girl is sick at the moment with some fluey thing. She has had a temperature for the last 2 days and it is slowly going. That is one thing that I am going to endeavour to change in 2006 - we were both sick for the best part of 2005 with fluey, buggy things and I think we've had enough!

I'm a bit very excited today cos I just applied to join in the SecretPal 7 for this year, I hope I'm not too late, deadline is today but if I allow for the time differences I may make it. That means I need an About Me post.

Oh, I also joined the Australia New Zealand Knitters webring, this may inspire me to post more and take pics of my projects.

I don't expect a lot of visitors here, actually don't expect any at all, cos this is mainly my place in cyberspace for my ramblings, knitting and spinning stuff etc.
I should have set this up when I was dyeing my yarn that would have been great with step by step photos. I still have the blue stain on my kitchen floor.

My shrug has been sitting very close to being finished I have about half a sleeve - no just the ribbing to finish off that's only 9 rows but I hate ribbing so that will go slow- and to sew the seam.

I used Zhivago for my shrug and that has been so nice to knit with and the fabric has come out soft so I should get a wriggle on and do it lest it become a UFO!

Goodbye 2005

Last year was a difficult year, my marriage ended in the middle of 2004. We are still sharing the same house, he has moved out to the back room, so that we can sort ourselves out. I found myself struggling with all sorts of feelings.

If it wasn't for my little girl, my work, having counselling and a small stint on anti-depressants, I think I would have fallen into a bigger hole that I actually did. It is even more upsetting because my daughter is caught in the middle and deserves better.

2005 has been a year of learning for me, I have read soo many self help books I should be able to counsel others soon.

This was the first Christmas that I spent partly by myself, which wasn't anywhere as bad as I thought it would be.
I actually had fun and enjoyed myself. I cooked a yummy turkey, which was ready to eat when my daughter came home for lunch. I played on the computer and had my favourite music up loud.

I think that was the turning point, knowing that if I could make it through Christmas Day, that I was finally going to be okay.

Anyway as difficult as this time has been and continues to be, I will not dwell on it anymore. I'm letting it go.

Goodbye 2005.
